Steward Health Care says the support of an external agent is necessary to keep the hospital operating and serving its patients, specifically the region’s behavioral health patients, trauma patients and women. The pandemic made it even more difficult to keep the hospital running. The organization says when it took over TVMC in 2017, it was struggling financially due to a public hospital competitor across town. Steward Health Care, which oversees TVMC, says it put forth a proposal for University Health Systems and Bexar County to take over, but neither accepted the offer. More than half of their patients are government pay patients, which means the hospital is paid less than the cost of patient care. TVMC serves limited-income, high-needs patient populations. SAN ANTONIO - Texas Vista Medical Center, a 327-bed hospital located on San Antonio’s Southwest Side, announced Wednesday it will be closing after 40 years.
